中國於1982年在上海召開的全國園藝學會，將秋菊中的大菊分?5個瓣類、30個花型和13個亞型，即平瓣類、匙瓣類、管瓣類、桂瓣類、畸瓣類。而國際菊花協會則將所有菊花分十二型：

 第一型
不規則內曲型：小花鬆散內曲形成完全密閉之中心，下方的小花有裙擺之效果。
Class 1 Irregular Incurve : The
florets (petals) loosely incurve and make fully
closed centers. Lower florets skirted-like. |
第二型
反折型：似鳥羽的舌狀小花反折向下並重疊。
Class 2 Reflex : The florets
in this class curve downward and overlap, similar
to bird plumage. |
第三型
規則內曲型：小花平順地向內曲成球形。
Class 3 Regular Incurve : The
florets smoothly incurve and form a ball.

第四型
勳章型：上方的小花向內曲，而下方小花常反折。
Class 4 Decorative : The upper
florets tend to incurve, lower petals generally
reflex. |

第五型
中度內曲型：頭花之小花較短，僅部分內曲成中心，外觀較為鬆散。
Class 5 Intermediate Incurve
: This bloom with shorter florets, only partially
incurving with full centers, but giving a more open
appearance. |
第六型
絨球型：頭花呈小球型，花剛開時微扁平，完全開放時則呈圓形。
Class 6 Pompon : A small globular
bloom, somewhat flat when young but fully round
when mature. |
第七型
單瓣至半重瓣型：頭花具有中間的筒狀小花，以及一至數輪的舌狀小花。
Class 7 Single and Semi-Double
: A daisy-like flower with a center disk and one
or more rows of ray florets. |
第八型
銀蓮花型：頭花似半重瓣型，但中心突出如軟墊狀。
Class 8 Anemone : Blooms are
similar to the semi-doubles, but have a raised cushion-like
center. |

第九型
匙型：頭花似半重瓣型，但舌狀小花先端為匙形。
Class 9 Spoon : Same as the semi-double,
except the ray florets are like spoons at the tips.

第十型
翻羽型：小花先端直管狀，全為舌狀花。
Class 10 Quill : The florets
are straight and tubular with open tips.

第十一型
蜘蛛型：小花長管狀，先端盤繞或彎曲。
Class 11 Spider : Long tubular
ray florets which may coil or hook at the ends.

第十二型
刷子型：細管狀的小花呈與莖平行生長似刷子形。
Class 12 Brush or Thistle :Fine
tubular florets grow parallel to the stem, and are
like brushes. |
